The vacant, former John Dewey Elementary School in Oak Park, will be renovated and open this fall as a charter school, renamed the Frederick Douglass International Academy.
“We will be ready to serve the needs of the Oak Park community, says Glenn Mach, controller at the Hanley Harper Group Inc. The 1950s era building is in good physical condition with over 49,450 square feet of existing classrooms and ancillary service areas such as library, gym, lunchroom, and administrative offices.”
“Frederick Douglass is one of 24 public school academies authorized by Ferris State University. We are looking forward to strong interest and an exciting future for the new school,” says Ronald Rizzo, director of Charter Schools, Ferris State University.
Rizzo says as an authorizing body, Ferris State University provides oversight through its Charter Schools Office. The office is responsible for monitoring compliance in accordance with the terms and conditions of the contract and all applicable state and federal law.
The charter school will be located at 21700 Marlow Ave. and will accommodate students from preschool to the 6th grade.
